What To Expect

Our Process

Contact us as soon as possible if you are having an emergency. We’ll schedule your visit as soon as we can.

We will provide our best treatment to meet your needs. If necessary, we can refer you to a specialist for follow-up care.

After your visit, we’ll continue to monitor your health and ensure your recovery is as quick and comfortable as possible.

What it Treats

  • Severe toothache or dental abscess
  • Knocked-out tooth (act within 30–60 minutes)
  • Broken or badly cracked tooth
  • Lost dental filling or crown
  • Uncontrolled bleeding in the mouth
  • Swelling in the jaw or face
  • Severe soft tissue injury to the gums or lips
  • Dental infection with fever or swelling

What Emergency Dentistry Treats

Our emergency dentist in Hilton Head can treat an array of oral conditions with our emergency dental care.

For major issues, you may need to go directly to a hospital or oral surgeon, but we can help with many of the most common dental emergencies.

How Emergency Dentistry Works

Dental emergencies range from manageable to serious, and knowing what to do before you arrive can make a real difference. If a tooth has been knocked out, keep it moist — hold it in your cheek or in a glass of milk and get to us within an hour. For a dental abscess or swelling, do not apply heat; a cold compress on the outside of your jaw can help reduce swelling while you travel to us.

When you arrive at our Hilton Head office, Dr. Sugg will assess your condition right away. We prioritize pain relief first, then stabilization, then a clear treatment plan. Most dental emergencies — broken teeth, lost crowns, infections, and severe toothaches — can be treated the same day. For cases requiring an oral surgeon or hospital-level care, we will coordinate your referral immediately so you are never left without a path forward.”

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dental Care

Medically reviewed by
Ocean Aesthetics & Dental Team

If you are experiencing unbearable pain, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a life-threatening situation, go straight to an emergency room or hospital immediately.

For everything else, call our office at (843) 342-6677 and Dr. Sugg’s team will guide you on what to do next. The following situations are generally not dental emergencies and can wait for a scheduled appointment:

  • Mild or dull toothache without swelling
  • Small chip or crack in a tooth that isn’t causing significant pain
  • Broken braces wire or bracket
  • Object stuck between teeth
  • Minor cuts or sores in the mouth that aren’t bleeding heavily

That said, you know your body best. If your pain is severe, worsening, or accompanied by swelling or fever — call us. What starts as a mild toothache can sometimes signal an infection that needs prompt attention.

Pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root. Rinse it gently without scrubbing. If possible, reinsert it into the socket or keep it in milk or between your cheek and gum. Call us immediately — the best outcomes happen when we see you within 30 to 60 minutes.

Many dental emergencies can be prevented with a few consistent habits:

  • Brush and floss daily — removing plaque regularly prevents decay and infection, two of the most common causes of dental emergencies
  • Keep up with routine exams — Dr. Sugg can spot a weakening filling, a hairline crack, or early infection long before it becomes an emergency situation
  • Wear a custom sports mouthguard — over-the-counter guards offer limited protection; a custom-fitted guard from our office significantly reduces the risk of knocked-out or broken teeth during contact sports
  • Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, or using your teeth as tools — these are among the most common causes of cracked and broken teeth we see

If it has been a while since your last checkup, schedule a dental exam — it is one of the most effective ways to avoid an unexpected emergency.
