Replacing Extracted Teeth
We recognize that not everyone is comfortable leaving the empty space from their tooth extraction. Beyond improving your confidence, replacing your teeth can also improve your mouth health by preventing shifting. We offer a range of implants and restorative procedures designed to keep your teeth looking and functioning at their best.
Preparing for Tooth Extraction
- Arrange for a friend or family member to accompany you and ensure safe transportation back from the dental office.
- Fill any prescriptions beforehand so they are readily available after the procedure.
- Pre-purchase soft foods, cold packs, gauze pads, and over-the-counter medication or oral rinses.
Recovering from Tooth Extraction
- Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that could irritate the extraction site.
- Avoid using a straw, smoking, or vigorous rinsing to prevent dislodging the blood clot and developing a dry socket.
- Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek every 20 minutes (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off).

We typically use anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth, so you should not feel pain during the extraction. However, you may experience some pressure and minor discomfort. After the procedure, you may experience temporary pain and swelling, but over-the-counter pain medications tend to provide ample relief.
For the first few days after a tooth extraction, it is best to stick to soft foods. You should avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that could trigger irritation. As you continue to heal, you can gradually reintroduce solid foods into your diet.
While rare, complications can include infection, excessive bleeding, dry sockets (a condition where the blood clot at the extraction site becomes dislodged), or damage to surrounding teeth or structures.
If you received local anesthesia for your extraction, you can drive yourself home afterward. However, if you opt for sedation or general anesthesia, you’ll need to arrange for someone to drive you home.
The timing for placing a dental implant after a tooth extraction can vary depending on factors such as the location of the extracted tooth, the condition of the surrounding bone, and your overall oral health. You may need to wait a few months for the extraction site to heal before placing an implant, but it is best to consult with your provider first.
If you do not replace an extracted tooth with a dental implant or another form of restoration, it can lead to issues such as shifting of adjacent teeth, difficulty chewing, and changes in facial appearance. We will discuss your replacement options based on your specific needs and preferences.
