Who Should Be Screened?

Everyone can benefit from regular oral cancer screenings, but the following individuals are considered higher risk:

֍   Tobacco users (including vaping or smokeless tobacco)

֍   Frequent alcohol consumers

֍  Individuals with significant sun exposure (lip cancer risk)

֍  People with a history of HPV (human papillomavirus) 

֍   Adults over 40

Even if you don’t fall into these groups, routine screenings are still essential for maintaining full-body health.

Signs & Symptoms to Watch For

If you notice any of the following symptoms lasting longer than two weeks, schedule an exam right away:

֍    Persistent mouth sores or ulcers

֍   Red or white patches on the tongue or gums

֍   A lump, thickening, or rough spot in the mouth or throat

֍   Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking

֍   Numbness or pain in the mouth, face, or neck

Early evaluation can lead to early treatment—and a much better outcome.

    Ocean dental and Doctor Elizabeth Sugg saved my smile! This dental practice excels in both customer service and skill. Sitting on the beach in Hilton Head, ten hours from home, I bit into a carrot only to find my long standing frontal bridge was gone. I was devastated and not a pretty sight with my four front teeth in my hands, then I saw that one of the anchor teeth was broken. Having no experience with local dentists, I called several practices and lisped my crisis. All the others could offer were appointments sometime the next day. Ocean dental not only calmed me down, but gave me an appointment within the hour that afternoon, and provided helpful directions across the island. Dr Sugg graciously stayed beyond regular office hours to do a permanent reattachment of my bridge, and I left Ocean Dental fully able to enjoy the rest of my vacation. The staff readily worked with my existing dental insurance. If I lived in Hilton Head, Dr Sugg and Ocean Dental would be my dentist
